Many of us remember being taught a simplified doctrine on histone modifications: certain marks tend to appear on transcriptionally inactive, condensed heterochromatin, while others characterize active, open euchromatin. In particular, H3K27me3 tends to mark facultative heterochromatin that may be expressed during development, whereas H3K9me3 is associated with constitutive heterochromatin. However, histone modifications do not reliably distinguish between heterochromatin and euchromatin, as numerous studies have shown, and as Justin Becker and colleagues in the Zaret lab demonstrate in their recent publication in Molecular Cell1. They debut a new techniqu...

In a run-down shack town, a fly drinks from a standing pool of water and unknowingly ingests unicellular protozoans of the genus Leishmania. As the sand fly takes its blood meal from an unsuspecting human, the parasites deploy into the fly’s saliva and enter the human’s bloodstream. There, they infect host macrophages and multiply until the cells fill and burst, which further spreads the parasite to more macrophages. In a short amount of time, the Leishmania parasite can induce painful, open lesions of the skin in what is known as cutaneous leishmaniasis. This disease is most prevalent in the poorest areas of the world and is due to a lack of quality hous...

“What do you want to do with your PhD?”

Both dreaded and inescapable, this question seems to crop up at every gathering of family, old friends, and new acquaintances. For those of us who mark “industry” in our tentative list of potential careers, it can seem a daunting path to an endpoint with uncertain responsibilities. What are some of the jobs available in industry? How does a PhD student gain the experience and seek out opportunities that lead into those positions? The best way to answer these questions is to ask people who have walked that path before: people like Wenny Lin, a CAMB-GTV alumna who now works as a Senior Real World Data Scientist (or ep...
